MUSIC FOR GREEN EARS
The experimental visual artist and composer Henning Christiansen (1932-2008) comes alive, when his son Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen plays music excerpts from vinyl records and talks about working with his father’s extensive archive.
(Presented with Samsø Library)
Henning Christiansen created art from the 1960s until his death in 2008. He was a visual artist, performance artist and composer, trained as a clarinetist and music teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He lived and worked on the island of Møn, always with an open telephone line to the rest of the world – and to nature. He was part of the artist collective ‘Eks-skolen’ (with Poul Gernes, Per Kirkeby and Nam June Paik, among others) and a lifelong member of the worldwide FLUXUS movement. Often he created his works in collaboration with others, such as the german artist Joseph Beuys and the danish Bjørn Nørgaard.
As a composer, Christiansen worked with classical music, avant-garde and film music – and with field recordings with his tape recorder. “You have to listen to nature”, Henning Christiansen said, and painted one of his ears green. Just as he also painted stones and violins green, created hammer music and invented the concept of “Music as Green”.
His son Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen tells all about it on Thursday 4 September at Knulp in Tranebjerg. Thorbjørn has worked for many years with digitizing 30,000 documents and 400 reel-to-reel tapes and 100 cassette tapes. The aim is to publish and perform works in the spirit of Henning Christiansen. To make the artist’s archive come alive.
After the lecture, the ‘Henning Christiansen Homemade Orchestra’ will perform the composition Music for Green Ears, Symphony Natura 1985-2025.
Friday 5.9., 4pm – AGERUPGÅRD, Agerup 6
SHEEP INSTEAD OF VIOLINS / SOUNDING CRISIS / GREEN LIBRARY / GREEN DINNER
Sound art, performance, exhibitions and dinner! Henning Christiansen – ‘Sheep Instead of Violins’ – sound installation with sheep as musicians in a castle of straw bales / Ania Mauruschat ‘Sounding Crisis’ – sounds and energy in a time of climate change.
4pm – SHEEP INSTEAD OF VIOLINS
‘Schafe Statt Geigen – Opus 186’ (‘Sheep Instead of Violins’) is a sound installation with sheep as musicians in a castle of straw bales, originally created by the Danish composer and Fluxus artist Henning Christiansen. The work was first performed at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria in 1988. For GRØN MUSIK it will be recreated by scenographer Rachel Dagnall and visual artist/archivist Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen, together with a flock of Spælsau sheep.
In Agerupgård’s old horse stable there will be an exhibition with Henning Christiansen’s original sketches and drawings for ‘Sheep Instead of Violins’, as well as documentation of previous performances of the work.
5pm – SOUNDING CRISIS
Sound researcher Ania Mauruschat presents her project ‘Sounding Crisis’ about sounds and energy in a time of climate change, seen in a global perspective from Australia to Samsø. The focus is on three case studies: on so-called ‘songlines’ among Aboriginal people in Western Australia, frame drums among the Inuit in Kalaallit Nunaat, Greenland and the use of music at demonstrations by climate activists in Copenhagen. In her lecture, Ania will play audio clips and open a conversation with the audience.
Ania Mauruschat is a journalist, author and researcher with a focus on radio, sound, art and nature. She was born and raised in Berlin and has lived and worked in Munich, Basel, Sydney, Copenhagen and Nuuk, among other places. Since the winter of 2024/25, she has been living and working in Stauns on Samsø.
6pm – GREEN LIBRARY
The green room at Agerupgård used to function as a meeting place, where shared meals were served for the farm’s employees. For GREEN MUSIC, the room will function as a library and shop with relevant publications in relation to the weekend’s themes, collected by TERRAFORM and Henning Christiansen Archive. The library will open with a short introduction to the collection’s highlights.
6:30pm – GREEN DINNER
For the occasion, artist duo Juliane Schreiber and Hannah Giese will prepare a green long table dinner. Their usual artistic specialty is textile and text / textile and space, respectively. But during dinner on Friday night it will be all about texture and color! The food will be vegetarian and local. Different types of fresh herbs will dominate the green menu.
Price: 200 kr (drinks can be purchased at the bar)
Reserve your spot via payment to MobilePay 76664, or via Paypal to terraform.island@gmail.com
Straw castle, exhibitions and Green Library are also open for visits Saturday and Sunday from 11am – 4pm.
Saturday 6.9., 5.30pm – BISGAARD, Bisgaard Forte 14
KNUD VIKTOR – LA SYMPHONIE DE LUBERON (1976)
We listen to Knud Viktor’s quadraphonic concert Image VI, which the artist himself considered as his masterpiece, in the beautiful forest at Bisgaard Forte. The evening starts with green food and an introduction by Viktor’s son Mark Viktov and Jacob Eriksen, director of Sound Art Lab, Struer..
(Presented with Bisgaard Forte and Samsø Art Council)
Knud Viktor (1924-2013) is an artist from Samsø – he grew up in the town of Pillemark from the 1920s to 40s, after which he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and then moved to Provence in southern France, where his groundbreaking work with sound was born.
Viktor used recordings of nature sounds to create complex compositions, which he called ‘sound paintings’. Viktor’s oeuvre constitutes a pioneering work in sound ecology and documentation of the biodiversity of a specific area. He manages to bring us very close to the unheard sounds around us, in a way that is as humble as it is moving.
IMAGE VI is Knud Viktor’s attempt to create a unified soundscape of the Luberon mountain, at the foot of which he lived for more than 50 years. He called it “a sound synthesis”, which is both a description of the mountain, but just as much a description of his own relationship with it. To realize the work, Viktor invented the instrument TETRAMIX: an electronic device that allowed him to compose for four sound channels.
Knud Viktor wrote himself about the work:
“… I do not consider it as music, but rather as a sound painting created from the sounds of nature around me. A depiction of the impressions I have received through 13 years of living in the Luberon mountains. By selecting the sounds that group themselves into different sound intensities and that I find most surprising, contrasting, modulating, dissonant, I try to achieve a feeling of the air, the light, the wind, the rain, the rock and the wild spicy vegetation of the Luberon.
Alternatingly, I emphasize the feeling of the underground life, like the cicada, and the experience of the great space and the expanses of the air: THE BROAD MOUNTAIN. The sound comes almost silently and scattered, and suddenly it unfolds, exuberant and explosive: THE HIGH MOUNTAIN. The cicada’s transformation, THE METAMORPHOSIS and THE DREAM OF MORNING will complete the work.”
The work is a quadrophony – a way of constructing a multidimensional sound space, where four speakers, placed in each corner of a square, play one channel of a four-channel sound work.
As a prelude to the concert, there will be an introduction by the artist’s son Mark Viktov and Jacob Eriksen, director of Sound Art Lab – a centre for the production and dissemination of contemporary Sound Art in Struer, Denmark.
At 5:30 pm, green food will be served by artist duo Juliane Schreiber and Hannah Giese. Drinks can be purchased at the bar. Admission to the event is free.
Bring a blanket or cushion to sit on, and appropriate clothing in cold weather.
8.15-10.30pm – STAUNS FJORD, Kanhave 1
BIRD WHISTLING AND BAT SOUNDS
Stavns Fjord is a fantastic natural area in the middle of Samsø. There is a rich birdlife here and at dusk it can be clearly heard – sandpipers, great shearwaters, geese, ducks and seagulls perform a symphony like no other. We are going out to hear it. We also use electronic aids to reveal some of the sounds we cannot hear: the calls of bats. What species of bats are found in the area? How do they find their way around at night?
(Presented with Samsø Naturskole)
Meeting point: Kanhave 1, 8305 Samsø (at the “boat” in Kanhavekanalen)
Children are welcome, so bring the whole family. It is perfectly okay to slip away when the children (or the adults) get too tired.
Practical information:
The sunset over Sælvigbugten is at 7:59 p.m., so it is obvious to enjoy it first. We will be out all evening, so clothing according to the weather and practical footwear is an advantage. We have lanterns with us so we can see where we are going. Leave the headlamp at home.
We have 6 bat detectors that you can borrow on the trip. They are plug-in ultrasonic microphones that plug into your smartphone’s charging port (type USB-C). To use the detectors, you need the app “Echo Meter Touch Bat Detector” from Wildlife Acoustics. The app is free and can be downloaded via Google Play or Appstore.
The night walk is arranged by Samsø Naturskole and supported by Friluftsrådet.
9pm-2am – KNULP, Langgade 12a
GREEN DANCE
Afterparty with DJ Tobi + DJs GENEPI & IKU SAKAN & KNEX
Sunday 7.9., 12-3pm – SAMSØ MUSEUMSHAVE, Museumsvej 10
SOUND INSTRUMENTS FROM THE PAST
– a program with Cajsa S. Lund (music archaeologist) and Ute Goedecke (musician), where you can both hear, touch and do!
(Presented with Samsø Museum)
Music and other sounds, with objects and with voice, have played a major role since ancient times, both for benefit and pleasure. Cajsa and Ute show and tell about sound instruments that were once common here in Scandinavia but that in our modern society are falling into oblivion, including those that were made from plant parts and other materials from nature – The Green Music!
They also take a look at our ancient and medieval times and have several archaeological finds with them, for example stone age rattles made of hazelnuts and viking-era wind instruments made of elderwood. Many of our recent folk instrument traditions have roots far back in time.
As an audience you can take a closer look at and try out several of the instruments yourself. In addition, you can make a few simple sound instruments from materials from nature, including bone scrapers, nut whistles, nutcrackers and mussel rattles.
Price: 50 kr – buy your ticket at Samsø Museum, Museumsvej 5.
All ages are welcome. The program is in english.
3.30pm – PILLEMARK, next to Storegade 43
KNUD VIKTOR – ALLO LA TERRE
We are looking forward to celebrate the inauguration of Knud Viktor’s sound installation Allo La Terre at the town’s pond in Pillemark!
(Presented with Samsø Art Council and Pillemark Borgerforening)
The artist Knud Viktor (1924-2013) is originally from Samsø – he grew up in the town of Pillemark in the 1920s to 1940s, after which he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and then moved to Provence in southern France, where he created his groundbreaking work with sound.
Viktor used recordings of nature sounds to create complex compositions, which he called ‘sound paintings’. Viktor’s oeuvre is a pioneering work in sound ecology and documentation of the biodiversity of a specific area. He manages to bring us very close to the unheard sounds around us in a way that is as humble as it is moving.
As one of his last works, Knud Viktor created the installation Allo La Terre (in english: Hello Earth): A telephone booth that invites you to listen to the earth – both concretely and figuratively. In the receiver you can hear Le Petit Sons or ‘The Small Sounds’, which Knud Viktor has collected. The sounds are examples of Knud Viktor’s artistic and documentary work recording the sounds in his immediate area. Through self-built microphones and devices, he gained access to a world of both large and small sounds that are normally not accessible to us humans.
Allo La Terre has now been recreated and will be inaugurated at its permanent location in Pillemark this afternoon. Chairwoman of Samsø’s children’s and culture committee, Helle Hansen, will preside over the official opening and inauguration of the work to the public.
The artist’s son, Mark Viktov, will say a few words, after which a drink and snack will be offered.
Everyone is welcome to a festive celebration and inauguration of this new work of art in Pillemark.

BUILDING A SPEAKER-INSTRUMENT
with JENNY GRÄF SHEPPARD
07.-09.02.2025
Agerupgård, Samsø
Are you working with sound art, experimental music or sculpture, and would you like to experiment with building a sculpture that can also work as a speaker? Now you have the opportunity to participate in a 3-day workshop with sound artist and researcher Jenny Gräf Sheppard, where we build unpredictable sounding speakers out of found materials like tree branches, bark, stones, wood, metal or other.
Objects with the following properties are especially suitable: firm but flexible like large pieces of bark, very thin but firm plastic sheets, things that have a sound already like large seedpods or thin porcelain or metal. We will also provide some materials to choose from, should you prefer.
At the start of the workshop, we will learn about the historical development of the speaker and its different applications as well as the history of transduction, where one form of energy is converted into another (such as electronic signal to audible sound). In addition we will discuss notions of control and dialogue with energies in instruments, which Gräf herself is invested in.
Through hands-on experimentation, the group will explore and enter into dialogue with the materials and energies in play while creating an experimental speaker. Participants will and how the various elements of their individual speaker and chosen sound sources being fed into them influence the way energies are expressed, from the electromagnetic, the kinetic, vibrational and sonic. The workshop ends with a public presentation at Samsø Library, where all the built speaker sculptures will be performed together.
Jenny Gräf Sheppard is an artist and musician based in Copenhagen. She has been spending the last few years building porcelain sound speakers that she performs with as “speaker-instruments”, sculptural forms that make unpredictable sounds and kinetic movements when playing sound through them. She has been exhibiting large ensembles of speaker-instruments in spatial sound exhibitions in Denmark, Sweden and Poland. For a glimpse of her work, see a short documentation of her most recent exhibition at Trafo Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin Poland in 2024 here.
The workshop costs DKK 150, which covers some of the materials (copper wire, magnets, solder etc). Please bring a sound source with minijack output (such as a mobile phone with minijack adapter). Feel free to bring your own music or pre-select music you would like to experiment with to send into the sculptural speakers you will be making.
At the end of the workshop, participants can purchase at an additional cost a small amplifier (approximately 150 dkk) and power supply (approximately 180 dkk).
Duration: Friday + Saturday from 10-15h (with lunch break)
Sunday from 10-12h, ending with a presentation at Samsø Library at 14h.
Accommodation and transport are not included. You can for instance book a room at Agerupgård B&B.
Send a short motivation incl. introduction of yourself no later than January 3rd to terraform.island@gmail.com
Terraform and Sound Art Lab will select up to 15 participants – answers will be received the following week.
The workshop is part of the project “Sounds of the Future” and supported by Region Midtjyllands Kulturudviklingspulje and Samsø Kommunes Kulturpulje.

BYG ET HØJTTALER-INSTRUMENT
med JENNY GRÄF SHEPPARD
07.-09.02.2025
VINYL CUTTING WORKSHOP
28.-30. NOVEMBER 2024

[EN] Eight international artists have throughout 2021 had the opportunity to live and work on the island for two weeks. They have explored and worked with the island’s resources to experiment, produce and develop new works and publications. A special focus has been put on serial works and multiples, artworks that are produced in several copies and thus can be easily distributed.
In their meeting with the island, technology has served them as a sensory tool, as the artists have used instruments such as metal detectors, surveillance cameras, microphones, scanners and photographic exposure to highlight and document a number of elements specific to the life and nature on Samsø. The results range from original artworks, texts, video and audio recordings to multiples made of different materials such as screen prints, wine, ceramic sculptures and more.
The project received support by Statens Kunstfond and Samsø Municipality.
